Why this Congress matters now

Media and information literacy research does not happen in a vacuum. It happens while algorithms decide what a billion people see before breakfast, while wars are fought as much over narratives as over territory, and while artificial intelligence rewrites, in real time, what it even means to know something. The Cairo 2024 Declaration for Global Understanding and Peace named this urgency. The Barcelona 2025 MIL Action Agenda turned it into commitments. The Official Congress, held in Cairo from 18 to 20 October 2026, is where those commitments meet evidence.

This is not a congress that collects papers to fill a programme. It is the scientific backbone of a process that has already produced two international declarations — and that intends to produce a third.

Agenda details

Seven research tracks

MIL and Education

Curricula, pedagogies, and teacher training that make critical engagement with information a core competency, not an add-on.

MIL, Children and Youth

How the youngest and most digitally immersed generations build resilience, judgement, and voice online.

Democracy, Civic Engagement and MIL

The role of MIL in sustaining participation and trust in an era of polarisation.

Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue through MIL

MIL as an infrastructure for understanding across difference.

Methodologies in MIL Research

The theoretical and methodological foundations that give the field its rigour.

MIL Regulation and Public Services

The policy, legal, and institutional frameworks shaping how MIL is delivered and governed.

MIL and AI

The newest track, and arguably the most urgent: what artificial intelligence does to information ecosystems, and what MIL must become in response.

One format, clearly defined

A single extended abstract, maximum 600 words, including institutional affiliation and contact details for all authors. No separate categories for posters, workshops, or prototypes.

Key dates

  • Abstract submission opens: Now
  • Submission deadline: 30 September 2026
  • Notification of acceptance: Within 15 days of submission, and in all cases no later than 3 October 2026
  • Conference dates: 18–20 October 2026, Cairo, Egypt

From abstract to publication

Authors of accepted abstracts present their full communication at the Congress, which then enters peer review on the way to publication, through three confirmed routes: the proceedings book, the Policy Forum publication, and a dedicated conference book.

Registration

Attendance without paper, or attendance with paper submission (full academic programme inclusion and publication eligibility).
